    Awards and rewards!

What is it that keeps Mammootty and Mohanlal going? Is it commercial success or critical acclaim that acts as a sort of boost to their King size ego's?

Mammootty can't live without awards; while Mohanlal's secret desire is to get an Oscar! Mammootty does not hide his craving for awards, when he confessed last week in Delhi: "I?m in love with awards and I make no bones about it. Ever year I hope to sweep all awards, for which I work very hard in my films and the roles I choose".

Unlike in other languages a superstar in Malayalam is always recognized more for his acting abilities than pure box-office reach. No wonder Dileep and Suresh Gopi are desperately trying to do art house cinemas along with their commercials to get that elusive award!

Mammootty is a master of the game, every year he has a mixture of what the trade calls class padam (Class films) and Thara padams (mass films). Mammmootty does class films virtually free and also makes it possible for their screening in theatres.

Last year he acted in three off-beat class films- Karutha Pakshikal, Palunku and Kaioppu. He was sure to get the award for the best actor from the state government which was run by his beloved CPI (M). But somebody inside the party, who does not like Mammooka, played dirty and the actor?s carefully laid out award plans went awry!

Mohanlal on the other hand is also craving for critical acclaim, more at the international level! As a producer if you promise him a premiere at Locarno or at Cannes, Lal Sir will give you priority dates!

Take a look at Mohanlal's 2007 art house films- Akasha Gopuram, Pardesi and his dream project with Adoor Gopalakrishnan. Mohanlal may be in with an outside chance to get international acclaim.

Mammooty never gives up! He is born fighter and this year he has already lined up off-beat director Shyam Prasad's Ore Kadal. The real big one is M.T Vasudevan Nair- Hariharan historical Pahazzi Raja, which holds great potential for the actor in Mammooty.

Says Mammooty philosophically: "Some you win, some you lose. But I will continue to do meaningful cinema and the quest for awards will continue".

Meanwhile Mammooty has been rewarded by people of Kerala as Mayaavi is slowly but surely turning out to be the first blockbuster of the year!
