Jubilant fans of actor Rajnikanth thronged cinema theatres since early hours as his much-awaited film Sivaji - The Boss hit the screens with a bang today.
A wave of enthusiasm swept the State as Rajnikanth's die-hard fans burst crackers, performed pal abhishekams and distributed sweets to celebrate the film's release.
Sivaji took 19 months to be completed and is said to be the most expensive movie ever produced in India. Huge banners and hoardings were erected in front of cinema halls where Sivaji was released. Directed by Shankar, the story of the film is about the fight against black money in society, which the protagonist does in his own way. Music director A R Rahman and national award-winning cinematographer K V Anand are also part of the Sivaji team.
A strong contingent of police personnel has been posted in all the theatres to control the crowds.
The movie is released in 18 cinema halls in Chennai and in over 500 cinema houses all over the State. Tickets for the movie have been sold out for the next two weeks.
Several theatres in and around the city had special screenings of the movie last night. Fans thronged in large numbers to watch it.
AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa watched the AVM Production's mega budget movie on the first day of the release. A special screening of the movie was arranged at the AVM studio here for Jayalalithaa, who watched the film along with Rajnikanth and producer A V M Saravanan.
Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has already watched the movie along with Rajnikanth. The Telugu version of the movie, which was also released today, was screened for TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu at Hyderabad yesterday.
Rajni's earlier movie Chandramukhi, released in 2005, is still running continuously for more than 800 days, creating a record in the South Indian film history.
