After the box-office debacle of 'Jilendra Oru Kaadhal' (the film's Kerala distribution rights were bought at exorbitant prices because they thought that the Surya-Jyothika marriage would give free publicity for the film), Surya was busy concentrating on ads for a while.
There were talks that he had run into financial crisis because he was also the producer of the film.
In order to earn back the money that he had lost, he was busy starring in one ad film after the other. More than a year had passed and he finally accepted a film with his favorite director Goutham Menon. Oscar Films is producing the new film, 'Vaaranam Aayiram' (a thousand elephants).
The first schedule lasted for about 30 days. The second schedule was supposed to begin in a few months.
That was when Surya began his other film, 'Vel'.
The producer of 'Vaaranam Aayiram' wasn't happy about it because he had invested huge sum of money in the film and Surya had to modify his looks to suit the role. Now, he had destroyed those looks for 'Vel'. Oscar Films has filed a complaint against the actor with the producers' guild.
