Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Film Exhibitors Federation has announced that no new Malayalam films would be released at any of the main theatres across the state from November 1. However, other language films would be released as usual.
"Those Malayalam films which are currently being exhibited in the theatres under Kerala Film Exhibitors Federation would continue to be screened," said the federation president Liberty Basheer.
The Federation is protesting against the government plan to do away with service charge, the new mode of classification of theatres and wide release
He added that any move from the part of the government to cut service charge even before November 1, would be met with complete shutdown of theatres.
The levying of a service charge of Rs 2 is actually meant for undertaking maintenance work in theatres. But, accusing the theatre owners of extracting the service charge from the public even in theatres with temporary thatched sheds, the state government had announced doing away with the tax.
Minister K.B. Ganesh Kumar had said that the classification of cinema theatres based on their facilities will be completed by October-end. It has also been informed that properly-equipped theatres would be allowed to resume service charge collection after the classification.
However, the federation has given a written complaint to authorities against the move. They also urged them to increase the service charge to Rs 5.
