Kamal Hassan is very firm in wanting to make Tamil cinema a paying proposition. He talks about it as well as tries out different methods to put his plans into action. He recently inaugurated the symposium on Indian cinema in Chennai and spoke out his thoughts and ideas.
Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, Madras Film Society and the US Consulate organized the day long symposium day before yesterday at the Park Sheraton in Chennai. The American Consul General David Hooper, the Vice President of Indo-American Chamber of Commerce Farook Balsara, Madras Film Society chief Abhirami Ramanathan, Indo-American Chairman R Ananth, actors Madhavan, Prashant, director Balu Mahendra and others participated in the function.
Kamal inaugurated the symposium and his talk was full of statistics. In America, the profits from films amount to about 30 billion dollars. One third of it comes from outside countries. Kamal said there are 36,000 theatres in America, 60,000 in China but only 9,000 in India.
As far as Tamil cinema is concerned, only a few like Kamal and Prakashraj put their earnings from films, back into films. What do the others do? Kamal said it should be open about where these earnings are going.
Foreign artistes should exchange ideas with Indian stars, and banks should come forward to finance films are some of the ideas put forth by Kamal.
Kamal suggested that the ideas emerging from the symposium should be compiled and presented to the Tamilnadu govt. "This is a friendly govt and has given a lot of concession for Tamil cinema," he said in explanation.
