    Simran humiliated!

All fading actresses try to cling on to the fame and glamour attached to movies. Some retire in grace, while others hang around, in the hope of reviving their sagging career.
Simran, the queen of Tamil cinema, was a rage among audiences. She was a fine actress who had the pick of roles and was featured with all top stars.

Her decline started when, after a failed love affair, she married a little known guy from Delhi.

As roles dried up, Simran began doing B-grade movies in Tamil and was also trying to promote her husband as hero! The move backfired and she ended up with egg on her face. She was reduced to doing commercials for unknown brands of rubber slippers and masala powders in other states!

Finally, she signed a Malayalam film Heartbeats, produced by first-time producer Jolly Joseph and a debutant director Vinu Anand. Simran played the role of a mystery woman Thankam George, who meets a group of youngsters, and one of them, played by Inderjit (rising Tamil- Malayalam hero Pritviraj?s elder brother), falls in love with her. She does not reciprocate his love and tries to avoid him. This was the one-line story that Vinoo narrated to Simran who shot for a week for the film and suddenly disappeared from Kochi where the shooting took place.

Anyway, Heartbeats was released last week, and fans of the actress were shocked to see her in a stupid itsy-bitsy role, as an HIV positive patient who succumbs to the deadly disease!

At the end of the movie, a double of hers is shown in a mortuary, and a doctor played by character actor Venu Nagavally explains to rest of the actors in the film: ?Tragedy and grief are a part and parcel of our life. During our younger days when we enjoy life without a care in the world, remember that tragedy can strike in future. Anybody can be inflicted by AIDS, please be careful.?

Among some of the unanswered questions that remain is: Why did a former top heroine do such a dumb role? There are so many continuity lags in the film, and the story looks twisted in the end. Anyway, Heartbeats bombed so badly that it had to be taken off the theatres by the third day!
