    50 days to Diwali!

Diwali (November 8), is just 50 days away, and Kollywood is getting ready to celebrate the festival of lights. This year, fireworks are expected at the Diwali box-office, as it is going to be the biggest ever clash in recent times.

Take a look at the delicacies to be served in Tamil Nadu theatres this Diwali, which is the second biggest season, after Pongal, for the audiences. In alphabetic order of the stars, the likely releases are- Ajit?s Billa, Cheran?s Piravom Sandhipom Silambarasan?s Kaalai, Surya?s Vel, Vijay?s Azhagiya Tamizh Mahan and Vikram?s Bheema.

In Hollywood or even Bollywood, the first copy of these films would have been ready by now, but in Kollywood, the post production work, release schedule, and financial haggling and settlement goes on till a few hours before the release! So nobody, not even God, can predict which film will make it to the screen on the promised day.

What is the status of these proposed Diwali releases, as of today (Sep 19)?

Azhagiya Tamizh Mahan - Vijay is still completing the shoot of the film in Hyderabad. Director Bharathan is extremely slow in his takes and a perfectionist like his mentor Dharani. The re-mix song in the film, featuring Vijay and Shriya, is yet to be shot and then it is pack-up! This gives Bharathan about 40 days for the post production work, which includes a lot of graphics and also A.R Rahman?s re-recording which is time consuming.

Bheema - The shoot is over and Lingusamy is almost through with the post production. The complete professional that he is, Vikram has finished his entire dubbing for the film, without insisting on his balance payment. There are very few stars like Chiyaan, who will do such magnanimous things. Remember that among the likely Diwali films, only Bheema?s audio has been released and is ruling the charts. From the first week of October, Harris Jayaraj will start the re-recording; the first copy of the film is likely to be ready by Oct 21.

Billa- Vishnuvardhan and Ajit are very keen that they release the film for Diwali. The entire talkie portion of the film is over, what remains are two songs, one to be picturised on Ajit and Nayan and the other the famous ?My name is Billa??, a solo song with Ajit. Both the songs will be picturised in Malaysia, from the end of this month. Dubbing is going on and Vishnu is simultaneously doing post production work. Yuvan will start the re-recording by mid-October.

Kaalai- All that we know, is that the shooting for the film is going on and the unit will leave for Venice to shoot songs in the first week of October. Simbu says the film will release during his lucky Diwali season, as his earlier films Manmadhan and Vallavan released during the same festival period. But producer ?Nic Arts? S.S Chakravarthy has never ever kept to his release days. (Ask Ajit?).

Piravom Sandhipom- Karu Palaniappan is still shooting for this Cheran-Sneha starrer. Whether or not they will release the film during the Diwali season, depends purely on the moves made by the biggies. If one or two of the biggies back out at the last minute, then the theatres will give them immediate dates. So in a way the whole thing depends on the moves the others make!

Vel- Producer Mohan Natarajan is very lucky to get a director like Hari. He has completed the entire shoot of the film, except a dream song which is to be picturised in Switzerland, from October 1 to 5. Hari is every producers dream director, as he works with clockwork precision and delivers the product before time! He is sure to deliver the censored version of the film before Oct 31. Any bets? Already 144 theatres in Tamilnadu, through its distributors have booked the Surya-Asin starrer as their Diwali release!

Well 50 days before Diwali, this is the release scenario. Please note, things change overnight in Kollywood, as the festival day approaches some of them may get cold feet or other new releases may pop up. However, we at Sify, will keep you posted.
