    Nasscom Proposes Creation Of SEZ

    Economic Times

Nasscom has proposed creation of special education zones to bridge the talent pool shortage in the IT sector. This comes in the backdrop of an estimated shortage of half a million skilled employees in the IT space by 2011. With export projections of $60 billion, an opportunity of almost $5 billion could be lost because of the estimate shortage.

Delivering the keynote address at International Symposium of Information Systems, Nasscom president Kiran Karnik said, "Soon you will see an opening up of the education system and there are no easy solutions to this. Private investment has to be allowed in," he said.

Indian IT Rides On Innovation Surge

    Hindustan Times

The innovation in Indian IT started four years ago, when Nasscom launched its forum for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Pune. In less than 50 months, the small flame of hope that was kindled that evening has blazed into a full-fledged movement that has seen many companies ? multinationals, large and medium Indian firms with global aspirations, emerging product and services companies and even progressive IT departments of large user organisations - vying to be recognised as innovative by their peers and customers.

Why is innovation important for an industry, which has set and sustained a scorching pace of growth and discovered new paradigms ? Remote Infrastructure Management, Knowledge Process Outsourcing etc, whenever the existing paradigm seemed threatened by commoditisation or competition? At the risk of repeating the obvious, this is an industry, which has built its reputation on high quality services at significantly lower cost of manpower than prevails in the Western world. However with the seemingly limitless talent pool under threat because of a lack of industry-academia curriculum partnerships and the cost of manpower as well as infrastructure creation ballooning every year, wage arbitrage alone cannot keep the industry going forever. Innovation, in business models, processes and products is an imperative for all participants in this industry.

Gartner, IDC Make Their 2007 IT Spending Predictions

    ComputerWire

Analysts at Forrester Research are predicting that IT spending will grow in 2007, but that spending growth will slow compared to that of 2006. Specifically, Forrester is expecting a slowdown in IT spending in both geographies in 2007, with the European market cooling a little to $586bn in sales, up 3.7%, compared to $742bn in the United States, up only 2.9%. That compares to a 5.8% increase in 2006 in the United States and a 5.1% increase in Europe.

If you want a second opinion, the prognosis will be much the same over at Gartner, at least among large enterprises in the United States. Gartner released a statement late last week that said the company's analysts have found after checks that big companies are expecting to only increasing their IT spending in 2007 by 2.8%. Only six months ago, these same executives were forecasting that their 2007 spending would rise by 6%.

Accenture Survey of Information Technology Executives Finds Improving Service Vies with Cost Reduction as Top Challenge

    Google News

An Accenture survey has found that information technology executives are beginning to focus almost as much on improving service provided to their companies as on cost reduction by consolidating and standardizing infrastructure.

The survey of 847 IT executives in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States asked about information technology infrastructure priorities and challenges for 2006 and beyond. When asked about the five IT challenges they face, the emphasis on value and service improvements, along with a focus on cost reduction, dominated the responses.
