    Family appeal over canal murder

The family of a young woman who was strangled have appealed for people to come forward in the murder inquiry. The body of Ffion Wyn Roberts, 22, was found in an old drainage canal in Porthmadog, Gwynedd, on Saturday.

The nursing home worker had been on a night out in nearby Tremadog with friends.

Her family said she was a "thoughtful and caring" woman with a "passion for football" who had "found her niche caring for others".

In a statement issued via North Wales Police, Ms Roberts' parents, Idris and Bethan, and younger brother Elgan, said the ambition of the former Ysgol Borth y Gest and Ysgol Eifionydd pupil had been to become a nurse in the Army.

Her father, Idris, said: "Ffion was thoughtful and caring and always put others before herself.

"She went into caring and had found her niche caring for others."

Ffion's grandfather, Hughie Jones, said: "Ffion was a lovely grandaughter. We used to go on trips together, and she was always thoughtful and did so much for me."

The family said Ms Roberts had worked as a carer at a local residential home for the past three years and before that had worked in another local nursing home.

They said Ms Roberts had a passion for football and was a regular at Porthmadog FC matches where she also worked in the canteen in the club house.

A two-minute silence in her memory is to be held at the club's next match.

Her father said: "Everton was her team. She loved the football, loved life and lived her life to the full.

"We as a family want people to come forward, to go to the police and tell them anything they know which may help."

Ms Roberts, whose family is said to be well-known in Porthmadog, had been out with friends in the Union pub in Tremadog until about 0330 BST on Saturday.

Then she is believed to have walked towards her home along Church Street.

    'Truth'

The two towns are only a mile apart. Detectives are said to be anxious to speak to anyone who may have seen her.

More than 100 police are involved in the investigation, which includes house-to-house inquiries.

Det Supt Peter Chalinor, the senior investigating officer, said: "At the present time no one has been arrested.

"We are following up all information and we will look at every avenue in search of the truth as to what happened to Ffion."

Anyone who was in the area of Tremadog or Porthmadog between the hours of 0330am and 0800 on Saturday is asked to call the police's incident room on 01745 538 474.This article is from the BBC News website. ?
