    Street star banned from driving

Coronation Street actress Sue Cleaver has been banned from driving after she was caught drink-driving in Manchester. The 46-year-old, who plays taxi operator Eileen Grimshaw in the soap, was stopped near her home in Northenden when her car ran into the kerb.

Cleaver admitted being twice the legal limit when she appeared at Manchester Magistrates' Court.

She was banned for 17 months and ordered to pay a £1,000 fine after the incident, which happened on 29 March.

The actress was driving a Land Rover Freelander when she was stopped in Palatine Road, Northenden, just a mile from her home.

She was breathalysed and charged with driving with excess alcohol.

    'Highly ashamed'

Cleaver told the court that her "spur-of-the-moment decision" to drive at night "could not have been more out of character".

Kerry Bell, prosecuting, said she was stopped by police at 0140 BST when her vehicle collided with the nearside kerb.

She was breathalysed at the scene and gave a positive alcohol breath reading.

She was taken to the police station and gave a further reading of 63mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath - the legal limit being 35mg.

Richard Silver, defending, said Cleaver had entered a guilty plea at the first possible moment.

"She is highly ashamed and deeply embarrassed to find herself before the court today and she wants to apologise for what she has done," he said. This article is from the BBC News website. ? British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
