Two men, aged 39 and 35, were arrested in the Broadway area of Roath, Cardiff, on Wednesday.
Aamir suffered multiple stab wounds at his family's home in Roath on Sunday 11 April after being attacked by two men as he answered the door.
The two men have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of the teenager and attempted murder of his parents.
Det Chief Supt, Stuart McKenzie, said: "Yesterday's arrests are a significant development in our investigation and the two men are being questioned in connection with the death of Aamir.
"We have had an excellent response to our appeal for information and we are receiving a lot of information from the community directly into the incident room and also through other routes such as house-to-house inquiries, at our mobile police station and via Facebook.
Vital cog"I wish to thank all those who have already come forward - your assistance is invaluable.
Det Ch Supt McKenzie, the senior investigating officer in the case, said that despite the arrests the murder inquiry team were "still very much appealing for information" which could be a "vital cog" in the investigation.
He said: "I am certain there are people out there with information who have not yet spoken to us.
"I am hoping that yesterday's arrests will encourage more people to come forward."
The arrests followed reports that men matching the description of two men seen fleeing the scene had visited a shop in Cathays, in Cardiff.
CCTV footage was recovered from the shop and two men believed to be those individuals were later arrested.
Det Ch Supt McKenzie said it was believed a knife was used in the attack, but no weapon had yet been found.
Meanwhile, friends of the teenager, described by his family as passionate about sport, are holding a fundraising football match in his memory.

They have used the social networking site Facebook to arrange the game at Heath Park, Cardiff, on Thursday.
One post on the site said: "Aamir loved football, he knew all the (useless) facts, he loved commentating, and last week he made his long-awaited comeback.
"So let's do it for him."
The match will raise money for the independent charity Crimestoppers.
