Extra police in murder probe town

Police have promised a "strong presence" in a town where a woman was found strangled a week ago.The body of 22-year-old Ffion Wyn Roberts was discovered in a ditch in Porthmadog, Gwynedd, last Saturday.

Extra patrols were laid on in the town on Friday night and more are expected as the murder inquiry continues.

Porthmadog FC, where Ms Roberts was a helper as well as a supporter, is to hold a minute's silence during a home game on Saturday afternoon.

Murder inquiry officers were handing out leaflets in local pubs on Friday night as the hunt for Ms Roberts' killer continues.

Her body was found in a stretch of water in Porthmadog town centre known as Y Cyt.

The nursing home worker was last seen early last Saturday in nearby Tremadog where she had been on a night out with friends.

She is known to have been in the Union pub until about 0330 BST on Saturday, before leaving to make her way home along Church Street.

Det Supt Peter Chalinor, the senior investigating officer, said his team would be speaking to people who may have been in the area last weekend.

He said: "We are continuing to get a great deal of help from local people.

"We will be asking people in the pubs to focus in on where they were last Friday night to try to jog some memories for any information which may help the investigation.

"The person or persons responsible have as yet not been arrested and the investigation is continuing on a large scale.

"We have an increased police presence in the town and this will continue over the weekend to reassure people."

North Wales Police has said there was nothing to suggest the killing was connected to any other incident in the area - it had earlier said officers were keeping an "open mind" about whether Ms Roberts' death was linked to assaults on women in the area in the past month.

Porthmadog police station has an "open door" policy between 0900 BST and 2200 BST for member of the public.

On Wednesday, the town's football club held a minute's silence in Ms Roberts' memory before a reserve side's game kicked off.

    'Much loved face'

It is to hold a second silent tribute ahead of its home game against Port Talbot.

The club said she was a "much loved face" and followers were "shocked and stunned" at her death.

Ms Roberts served tea and coffee at Porthmadog FC's canteen at home games, as well as helping provide after-match food for the players.

Anyone who was in the area of Tremadog or Porthmadog between the hours of 0330 GMT and 0800 GMT on Saturday is asked to call the police's incident room on 01745 538 474.This article is from the BBC News website. ?
