A man has been found guilty of stabbing a decorated soldier to death outside his family home in Renfrewshire.Barry McGrory, 28, was convicted of murdering 28-year-old Scots Guardsman Paul McGee on 25 October last year.
During a two-week trial at the High Court in Glasgow, McGrory had claimed the murder in Lochwinnoch was committed by former co-accused, Ian Wallace.
The fatal attack happened after Mr McGee came to the aid of a taxi driver who had been attacked by Wallace.
Wallace, 28, pled guilty to assaulting Mr McGee, his mother Anne, his girlfriend's mother Ann Laycock and taxi driver John Banach.
The court heard that McGrory had nine previous convictions, including one for carrying a knife. His former co-accused, Wallace, had 10 previous convictions for assault.
Following the guilty verdict, judge Lord Woolman told McGrory: "This was a despicable crime. You took the life of a young man as he lay vulnerable on the ground."
Area procurator fiscal for Argyll and Clyde, John Watt, said Mr McGee's death "was the result of senseless and extreme violence".
Mr Watt said: "He had recently been commended for his bravery during his time in Afghanistan and was robbed of his life on a return visit home.
"Although today's conviction cannot undo the suffering that Barry McGrory and Ian Wallace have caused, I hope that all those who knew Mr McGee can take some comfort in knowing that these men have been brought to justice for the charges they have faced."This article is from the BBC News website. ?
