EU surge in legal 'highs' found

A record number of new drug compounds were detected in Europe last year, according to the EU's monitoring body. The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction found 24 new psychoactive substances through its international early warning system.

Its joint report with European police forces said many substances were synthetic drugs, many of which have been recently banned in the UK.

The report says "legal highs" were a "growing challenge" across the EU.
