    The governor of the southern US state of Mississippi has declared a state of emergency after a series of powerful tornadoes ripped through the region, killing at least 10 people.

    Tornadoes were reported in the states of Louisiana, Arkansas and Alabama, but Mississippi was hit the hardest.

    In all, 15 counties were affected by the severe weather, with warnings fromthe US weather service that more storms were developing.

    High winds and driving rain flattenedsome buildings, while others had their roofs blown off.

    In Yazoo City, the epicentre of the storm, homes and businesses were reduced to rubble, and the military was drafted in to help in the search and rescue operation.
