    Ash-delayed troops return to UK

Soldiers whose return from Afghanistan was delayed by the volcanic ash cloud are due back in Wiltshire on Sunday. The troops from A Company 4th Battalion The Rifles, based at Bulford, have spent the past six months in the Sangin district of Northern Helmand.

Five members of the company were killed during the deployment.

They were L/Cpl Tom Keogh, Rifleman Carlo Apolis, Rifleman Martin Kingett, Rifleman Peter Aldridge and Rifleman Samuel Bassett.

    'Died fighting'

Maj Richard Streatfeild said: "We do not confuse taking casualties with a losing battle. Every one is a tragedy for families, friends and comrades.

"To a man they died fighting for their friends and doing the job they volunteered for."

Their flight home had to be postponed because of the ash cloud produced by the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which then caused a shutdown of European airspace last week.

Most flight restrictions across Europe have now been lifted but hundreds of British tourists and business travellers remain stranded as the air industry tries to get back to normal. This article is from the BBC News website. ?
