    Man charged over canal murders

A man has been charged with the murders of two women whose bodies were found in canals in London and the Netherlands. John Sweeney, 53, of no fixed address, will appear at Tower Bridge Magistrates' Court, London, on Wednesday, Scotland Yard said.

In 1990, Melissa Halstead's headless body was found in the Westersingel canal in Rotterdam.

In 2001 the body of Paula Fields, 31, was found in London's Regent's Canal. The deaths were linked in February.
