A true Supergran? Woman, 63, runs 26 marathons in 26 days

A grandmother from Pembrokeshire hopes to have sprinted into the record books after completing 26 marathons in 26 consecutive days.Rosie Swale Pope, 63, finished her 681-mile odyssey in Llanelli on Friday.

But she is not putting her feet up and is running one more on Saturday as a "thank you" to supporters.

Once the Tenby adventurer's exploit has been officially confirmed she will be hailed as the first woman ever to run so many consecutive marathons.

Mrs Swale Pope began running on Easter Monday in Tenby to raise money for children's hospices.

After completing her 26th marathon in darkness she was back on the road on Saturday morning in Tenby again where she plans to finish in the evening.

"This one is the official end but tomorrow will be a personal run to say thank-you to all of my supporters," said a tired but jubilant Mrs Swale Pope after finishing her 26th marathon.

"I am very, very pleased, it has been absolutely wonderful."

Throughout her marathon challenge, the grandmother has been pulling the three-wheeled cart called Icebird she used on an epic 20,000-mile global run that took her almost five years.

The cart held her provisions and camping equipment as she ran across Europe, Russia, Asia and north America.

As she had done during her round-the-world feat, she once again slept in her trusty cart during her latest challenge.

She was awarded the MBE for the global run, which she started in 2003, carried out in memory of her husband who had died of cancer.

Ms Swale Pope said she was motivated for her latest challenge around Wales and England by the "tragedy that children need hospices".

    'Real effort'

The 26-day event has seen her in places including London, Bristol, Tunbridge Wells and Bury St Edmunds.

In each location her run has covered a pre-planned route to achieve the 26 miles and 385 yards needed to be classed as a marathon.

All money raised will go to the Ty Hafan Hospice in Cardiff and Helen & Douglas House Hospices in Oxfordshire.

As she finished her run on Friday at the Millennium Coastal Park in Llanelli, she said: "I am very, very pleased, it has been absolutely wonderful."

"I have done this to prove that anyone can reach their dream no matter how old they are.

"These days with the recession, life is tough for everybody. I myself have never had much money.

"I wanted to do a journey where all you needed was real effort and where success and failure are nose to nose."

The marathon trek itself was conceived as a thank-you to all those who supported her on her round the world run. This article is from the BBC News website. ? British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
