Twelve held in EDL town protest

Reports of violence taking place the night before a protest by the English Defence League (EDL) in Buckinghamshire were "rumours" police have said. The EDL says it opposes "militant Islam" and will stage a protest in Aylesbury's Market Square later.

Supt Richard List said there had been "rumours circulating" about people being assaulted on Friday night.

"We would like to reassure people in the town that no such incidents occurred," he said.

"However, there were some early problems with road closures and I would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused."

    'Tolerant town'

All non-fixed street furniture has been removed including tables, chairs and bins.

Supt List said: "This will be a challenging day for us all.

"A national issue is being played out on our local stage.

"It is important that we all work together to maximise safety and minimise the disruption to our town.

"We are a tolerant, successful and proud town, we all need to remember our tremendous strengths at this difficult time."This article is from the BBC News website. ? British Broadcasting Corporation, The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites.
