Britain has been baking in temperatures higher than some Mediterranean hotspots this weekend. Beaches in Brighton, Sussex, were crowded with deckchairs, umbrellas and sunbathers.

Donkey rides and sand castles were popular on Southport beach, Merseyside.

Ice creams are also a staple on hot days and this Common Marmoset had to be quick at this safari park in Scotland.

The knotted white handkerchief is also another, less tasty feature of British summertime.

This couple found a shadier spot on London's Hampstead Heath from which to enjoy the clear blue skies and warmth.

Afternoon temperatures in Manchester hit 26.7C (30F), at one point edging ahead of Majorca's 26.5C and well above the May average of 16C (61F).

But this young girl in Nottingham found a good way to cool off.

There was more sunbathing than golf watching going on here during the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in Surrey.

Devon recorded a temperature of 25C (75F), central London 23.7C (75F) and Cardiff 24C (75F). In contrast, Bodrum in Turkey, Athens and Crete only managed temperatures of 21C (70F).
