A number of people were evacuated from the block as the fire engulfed flats on the seventh and eighth floors of Pitman House, in Tanners Hill, Deptford.
The London Fire Brigade said the fire at the 15-storey building was eventually brought under control and there were no reports of casualties.
Ten fire engines and 50 firefighters were sent to the incident.
