Man held after 29 hours on bridge

Police negotiations with a man who was standing on railings on a bridge for about 29 hours have ended safely.

Talks with the man on the bridge, above Paradise Circus in Birmingham, started at about 1555 BST on Wednesday.

Officers "seized an opportunity to intervene", and arrested the man under the Public Nuisance Act, a spokeswoman said.

The incident caused delays to motorists but several roads which were closed have now reopened.

Ch Insp Sean Russell, from West Midlands Police, said earlier that the plan was to bring the man down safely.

"We need to do what we can to ensure that this operation ends as safely as possible."

Specialist negotiators had been talking to the man throughout the night.

There had been long delays for drivers on all approaches to the Paradise Circus junction.

There were also problems on the Aston Expressway going back to Spaghetti Junction.
