Canada's federal government is set to announce on Wednesday whether it will block mining giant BHP Billiton's hostile takeover bid of the Potash Corporation, a fertilizer producer.
BHP is attempting a $38.6bn (£23.7bn) takeover of the Saskatchewan-based company.
The announcement will come more than a week after the province asked the Canadian government to block the bid.
Industry Minister Tony Clement must make a decision by Wednesday night.
Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall says the region will consider it a "profound betrayal of our province and its people" if Ottawa approves the offer.
By law, government officials in Ottawa must review takeovers by foreign companies to make sure that Canada could gain a net benefit from the deal.
Last month, Potash Corporation asked a US District Court in Chicago to block the bid, on the basis of BHP's "false statements and half-truths".
BHP said the lawsuit was "entirely without merit".
Anglo-Australian BHP Billiton is the world's largest mining company, while Potash controls more than 25% of the world's supply of potash - a common name given to salts mined for fertilizer.
