A man is in a critical condition in hospital after a suspected gas explosion destroyed a house in Barnstaple, north Devon.

The man underwent surgery after being airlifted to hospital in Swansea after the incident on Monday.

Another man, who was also rescued from the house, is in a stable condition at the same hospital.

Police said they believed the blast was linked to gas cylinders at the property in Trinity Street.

The explosion was so powerful that debris was found in a town square nearly 1,000ft (305m) away.

Walls were blown out and the roof blown off the house in the blast.

The injured men were initially taken to North Devon District Hospital, but were later transferred to Morriston Hospital in Swansea.

The hospital has a specialist burns and plastic surgery unit.
