Cable 'to vote yes to fee rise'

3 December 2010 Last updated at 13:08 ET Business Secretary Vince Cable has told his local newspaper he will back a rise in tuition fees in next week's crucial Commons vote.

He said: "Obviously I have a duty as a minister to vote for my own policy - and that is what will happen."

Mr Cable has previously said all Lib Dem MPs would act collectively to abstain in the vote.

He told the Richmond and Twickenham Times he had said this to offer an "olive branch" to colleagues.

He acknowledged that some Lib Dem MPs were "finding this difficult".

Liberal Democrats have faced angry protests from students, with the party's London MPs forced to cancel a planned conference after fears it would be disrupted.

Mr Cable told the newspaper he had reconsidered his decision and had "no doubt" he should support the controversial policy that will allow some universities to charge up to £9,000 in fees.
