Mark Williams will take a 5-3 lead into the evening session against Shaun Murphy as they battle to meet John Higgins in the UK Championship final.
Williams has struggled for consistency all week but began brightly with breaks of 46, 38, 54 and 73 to lead 3-1.
Murphy had made a 91 to get off the mark and battled back to level at 3-3.
Both players missed easy balls as the pressure mounted but Williams edged the final two frames, including a clearance in the last to cancel out Murphy's 49.
