An armed man has taken several children hostage in a French nursery school, police sources say.
Initial reports said the man, armed with knives or swords, was holding 20 children in the eastern city of Besancon.
The mayor was later quoted saying most children had been released and about five were still inside the nursery.
Specialist police are on the scene. It is not known if teachers are also being held.
France Info radio reported that the man was "unstable".
