Fire in roof at Blenheim Palace

21 December 2010 Last updated at 12:40 ET Firefighters have been tackling a blaze in the roof of Blenheim Palace.

More than 40 firefighters were called to the 18th Century country house in Woodstock, near Oxford, at 1330 GMT after flames and smoke were spotted.

Oxfordshire Fire Service said the fire, which caused "minimum damage" to the roof, was likely to be caused by staff heating external water pipes.

Blenheim Palace, which is home to the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, was made a World Heritage Site in 1987.

The property is also the birthplace of former prime minister Sir Winston Churchill.

The palace and gardens, landscaped by Capability Brown, are currently closed to the public.
