Man in court over farmer's murder

24 December 2010 Last updated at 11:46 ET A 23-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with the murder of County Armagh farmer Victor Stewart.

Peter Joseph Moloney of Drumarg Park in Armagh is accused of beating Mr Stewart to death at his isolated farmhouse in Middletown in October 2008.

He is also accused of stealing a safe from the property.

His father, also called Peter, 48, from Drumarg Villas in Armagh is charged with perverting the course of justice and witholding information.

It emerged in court last month that police taped a conversation between Peter Moloney Senior and his daughter-in-law, the wife of his co-accused, in which they maintain he tried to dissuade her from going to the police with information she had about the murder.

It was also revealed that his daughter-in-law had contacted the police anonymously within three months of the killing.

Objecting to bail, the detective sergeant said that police now had serious concerns for her safety.

He added that police were still trying to locate other suspects.

    Bail was refused.

Peter Joseph Maloney will apply for bail at a further hearing next month.
