Archers fans gear up for 'shock'

Ruth Archer (aka Felicity Finch) shows the BBC's David Sillito how to make the sounds of The Archers

Anticipation and speculation are building as fans of BBC Radio 4's The Archers await a shocking storyline that will mark the show's 60th anniversary.

Secrecy surrounds the details of the plot, with producers saying only it will "shake Ambridge to the core".

Series editor Vanessa Whitburn has said the repercussions will be felt in the fictional rural village for a decade.

The mystery has led to wild guesswork online - although Ms Whitburn ruled out terrorists, earthquakes and Martians.

"What will happen on Sunday evening will have a profound impact on Ambridge and central characters, and it will go on and on," she told the Sunday Times.

"It will still be affecting Ambridge in 10 years' time."

The radio drama's strategy of secrecy is in direct contrast to the tactics of TV soaps, which regularly release details of their storylines in advance.

It has led to feverish conjecture on message boards, Facebook and Twitter, where the term "sattc" - shorthand for "shake Ambridge to the core" - was one of the most popular trending topics on Sunday.

Some of the show's five million listeners are anticipating Helen Archer will die or lose her baby, while others are expecting one of the characters to go on a shooting spree.

One fan, Katie Marsh, wrote on Twitter: "Stress scuppering New Year's Resolution 2 (thou shalt not bite thy nails). Tension so high I may need medical attention by 7pm."

Another, named Liz R, wrote: "Shock horror, Helen gives birth to twin lambs in the lower field whilst Tony is electrocuted in the cow spa?"
