    Oldham set for by-election vote

12 January 2011 Last updated at 19:06 ET Voters are set to go to the polls in Oldham East and Saddleworth in the first by-election since the coalition government was formed last year.

There are 10 candidates for the seat, which Labour's Phil Woolas won last year, with the Lib Dems coming second and the Conservatives third.

The by-election was called after Mr Woolas was barred from office for making false claims about an opponent.

Voting begins at 0700 GMT, with polls closing at 2200 GMT.

A result is expected at about 0200 GMT on Friday.

The contest was triggered after a court found Mr Woolas, the former immigration minister, had made false statements about Lib Dem Elwyn Watkins in last year's general election campaign and invalidated the poll outcome.

It barred Mr Woolas from holding or standing for elected public office for three years.

At the general election Mr Woolas got 31.9% of votes and Mr Watkins 31.6%, with Conservative Kashif Ali on 26.4%. The BNP got 5.7% of votes, UKIP 3.9% and the Christian Party 0.5%. Turnout was 61.2%.
