Australia have named left-arm spinner Xavier Doherty ahead of off-spinner Nathan Hauritz for the first of seven one-day internationals against England.
Pacemen Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle will also sit out as Australia experiment ahead of the World Cup.
Sunday's ODI in Melbourne will be Australia's last before the 19 January deadline by which teams must name their final 15-man squad for the tournament.
"Our plan was always to play Xavier here," said selector Greg Chappell.
"We spoke to Nathan Hauritz in the week and advised him that if selected, the first game he plays in this series would be in the group of matches which start with the second ODI on 21 January at Bellerive, Hobart.
"Pending selection, we look forward to seeing him in Hobart next week."
Australia team to play England at the MCG: M Clarke (captain), C White (vice captain), D Bollinger, X Doherty, D Hussey, M Hussey, B Haddin, S Smith, B Lee, S Tait, S Watson.
