Man saves family from house fire

22 January 2011 Last updated at 14:18 ET A man has rescued a family from a fire at a terraced house in Omagh, County Tyrone.

The blaze, which began in a ground floor bedroom at the property in Old Mountfield Road, was reported at 1447 GMT on Saturday.

Fire service station commander Paddy Quinn said the man had rescued a woman and two children after being alerted to the fire by one of the children.

He ran to tell officers at a nearby fire station who put out the blaze.

Mr Quinn said the bedroom and hallway of the property had suffered fire damage in the blaze, with the rest of the house sustaining smoke damage.

He explained how the man had rescued the family from the building. The woman was later treated for smoke inhalation in hospital.

"The man rescued his wife and two children through a rear window from the first floor of the house," he said.

"He was upstairs and had a ladder.

"He got all of them out and then ran 30 metres across the road to Omagh Fire Station.

"The guys at the station were surprised to see this guy who was barefooted arriving at the door.

"The fire service responded quickly and using hoses and breathing apparatus got the fire under control."

Mr Quinn said two fire appliances had been sent to the house to tackle the fire and that a working smoke alarm was in operation at the property.

He said:"The smoke alarm was still going when we arrived.

"The Red Cross Fire Victims Support Unit will now help the family go about getting somewhere to stay."
