Suresh Kalmadi, the beleaguered chairman of the Delhi Commonwealth Games organising committee, has been sacked with immediate effect.
Lalit Bhanot has also been removed from the post of secretary general.
"We sought legal advice from the attorney general and we were told that we could do it. So we have done it," said Sports Minister Ajay Maken.
Mr Kalmadi had been questioned by investigators about alleged financial malpractice in last October's event.
He quit a Congress party position in November, weeks after the government ordered a probe into allegations of financial irregularities in the awarding of contracts at the Games.
Mr Kalmadi and Mr Bhanot have denied wrongdoing.
