A man is reported to have shot himself in a park in Luton, Bedfordshire, following a stand-off with police which started on Sunday night.
Police negotiations with the man, who was in Leagrave Common, continued into Monday.
The man was believed to be between 50 and 60 years of age.
Dozens of officers were at the scene and a cordon was set up. People were advised to stay away, but officers said there was no danger to the public.
A single gunshot was heard at about midday by a BBC reporter at the scene.
An eyewitness said: "The man is now lying on the ground. He is surrounded by armed police and paramedics."
Cordon in place The stand-off started at about 2030 GMT on Sunday night when a man was challenged by armed police who suspected he was carrying a gun.
Armed officers surrounded the man and trained negotiators were brought in as police shut down the large open space.
They stayed with the man through the night and brought him a take-away meal.
A police cordon remains in place around the park between Sundon Park Road and Henge Way.
