British composer known for James Bond themes dies

John Barry, the award—winning British composer who wrote the music for 11 James Bond films, including Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice, has died at the age of 77, it was reported Monday.

He died from a heart attack, the Press Association said.

Barry, who was born in York, northern England, also composed the theme music for Born Free, Midnight Cowboy and, more recently, the thriller Enigma.

He won five Oscars and four Grammy awards for his work. Barry first found fame as leader of the John Barry Seven. He was renowned for his lush strings, orchestral swells and elegant melodies.
