    Devine 'not guilty' expenses plea

2 February 2011 Last updated at 06:23 ET Former Labour MP Jim Devine's trial has begun after he pleaded not guilty to expenses-related offences.

Mr Devine, appearing at Southwark Crown Court, faces two charges of dishonestly claiming for cleaning and stationery, involving claims totalling £8,745.

Mr Devine, 57, became MP for Livingston at a by-election in 2005, triggered by the death of former Foreign Secretary Robin Cook.

The former psychiatric nurse and union activist stood down as an MP last year.

Before becoming an MP, Mr Devine was Mr Cook's election agent between 1983 and 2005.
