    Man's body recovered from floods

6 February 2011 Last updated at 10:45 ET A 58-year-old man's body has been recovered from floodwater in Denbighshire, said North Wales Police.

Officers said it appeared the local man was in a vehicle which became submerged near a river.

There are 14 flood warnings in place across Wales and several roads closed.

Flooding across parts of north and mid Wales is continuing to cause problems with fire crews rescuing people from their homes and cars.

North Wales Police said the local man's body was recovered from floodwater near Llandrillo near Corwen after an extensive search and rescue operation by emergency services.

Fire and rescue crews found the body a short distance from a vehicle which a member of public has reported submerged on the B4401, near a river which had burst its backs.

Police said it was still too early to say what had happened although it would appear that the dead man was the driver of the vehicle.

Supt Jeremy Vaughan said: "This is a tragic incident and the police are liaising with the man's family.

"It emphasises the need to be extremely cautious in such adverse weather conditions and members of the public are advised to check weather conditions before making a journey."

Earlier, seven people were led to safety from properties in Llandysilio, near Welshpool, amid fast-rising levels on the River Vyrnwy.

Firefighter Adrian Bowen said the speed of the deluge took householders, evacuated to Oswestry, by surprise.

He described the flood water as an "unbelievable sight" and something he had "never seen in 20 years".

Among those rescued were an elderly couple, in their 70s, who had been "frantically trying to push water out of the property".

"As we arrived it started with a minimum of one inch and by the time we managed to rescue them it was eight inches to a foot coming in," said Mr Bowen.
