1 March 2011 Last updated at 12:25 ET A British soldier from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps has been killed in a gunfight in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has said.

The soldier was killed on Tuesday while on operations in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province. Next of kin have been told.

Wing Commander Martin Tinworth said: "He has given his life in the service of his country."

Since 2001, 357 UK service personnel have died in operations in Afghanistan.

Wing Commander Tinworth, spokesman for Camp Bastion, said: "I must, with great sadness, report the loss of a soldier from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps.

"The soldier was patrolling the area in the north of Nahr-e Saraj when he was hit by enemy gun fire.

"He has given his life in the service of his country whilst engaged in protecting the local population. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this deeply sad time."
