Margao, Apr 11 (PTI) Nigerian Odafe Okolie scored the all-important goal as ChurchillBrothers beat Lajong FC 1-0 in a round 20 match of the I-League to close the gap at the top of the tally, at the Nehru Stadium here today. Churchill, who survived stiff challenge in the first half of the match, surged ahead in the 42nd minute through Okolie and topped the scoring chart of the tournament with16 goals.
Churchill, with 32 points in their kitty, is on the third place after playing 19 matches while Lajong remained on 21 points after 20 outings. Both the teams were evenly poised in the first half.
Churchill had the first chance to surge ahead in the sixth minute but a combined move between Felix Chimaokwu and Okolie went in vain. After a brief midfield tussle, Lajong who matched their fancy rivals well, made a counter move and had a good chance to take lead but James Gbillee shot out cross off Aibor Khongjee.
Churchill who enjoyed midfield superiority nearly scored when defender Gouramangi Moirangthem''s powerful long-ranger was punched away by rival custodian R Lalthuammawia. The ball deflected the cross bar and off the rebound Felix''s weak effort was collected by Lalthuammawia.
