Late Scholes goal earns United dramatic victory

    Sat, Apr 17 07:50 PM

A stoppage-time goal from Paul Scholes earned Manchester United a dramatic 1-0 win at Manchester City on Saturday.

Scholes struck with a close-range header from a left-wing cross with time running out in the Premier League clash.

"I couldn't see a goal coming to be honest with you," United manager Alex Ferguson told Sky television.

"Towards the end City made a bit of a charge and the game got a bit open. I decided to push Scholes forward a bit and it paid off. "

United, who included Wayne Rooney in their team after an ankle injury, had the better of a tentative match with the England striker and Ryan Giggs both going close in the first half.

Second-placed United now trail leaders Chelsea, who travel to fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur in the late match (1630 GMT), by one point with the Old Trafford club having three games remaining.

"We are hoping Tottenham win tonight and if they do, the title is back on," said Ferguson.

"Obviously it is a big boost to Tottenham because they can go fourth tonight."
