Former world number one doubles player Paul McNamee has been defeated in an election to be the new president of Tennis Australia by New South Wales lawyer Steve Healy.
Healy, president of Tennis NSW since 2007, pipped the two-time Wimbledon doubles champion and twice Australian Open champion McNamee in a ballot in Melbourne on Monday. "I congratulate Stephen Healy and am heartened to hear him say there's a role for the disaffected members of the tennis community," McNamee said in a statement.
"I intend to continue my involvement in the sport, particularly in the Hopman Cup, and in addition intend to take up an opportunity in the critical implementation of world class clay courts in Australia."
Healy, who held an ATP singles and doubles ranking in 1984, has been named president elect until October when the incumbent Geoff Pollard retires after more than two decades at the head of the organisation.
"Steve was a pretty good player," Pollard said in a statement.
"He went on to become President of the northern suburbs tennis association and then President of Tennis NSW, and now will become President of TA, so he understands tennis from grassroots right through to the elite level."
