As the Indian Premier League's interim chairman Chirayu Amin spelled out his plans to clean up the IPL mess on Tuesday, his past association with his suspended predecessor and the man under scanner for financial mismanagement, Lalit Modi, came to light.
Way back in 1994-95, Modi made his first foray into cricket as a patron of the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) with Amin being the president. Amin still remains the BCA president and Modi the patron. Modi's address in the official documents happens to be Sterling Apartments, 17th Floor, Peddar Road, Bombay.
Asked if the BCA would continue to treat Modi as a patron if he is found involved in financial irregularities, Amin said, "Modi was made patron against my direction. (Former BCCI and BCA secretary Jaywant) Lele had done this job unofficially."
However, Lele maintained that Amin was well aware about Modi's inclusion in BCA as a patron, a decision that was taken after discussions during the BCA's managing committee meeting. "A man who is running such a big company should know that patrons are not made 'unofficially.' It was in the managing committee meeting the decision was taken to include him as the patron.
"I wonder how Amin is forgetting the fact that Modi had given Rs 4 lakh a year for three years continuously as sponsorship to the BCA. The sponsorship deal had taken place between Godfrey Phillips India and the BCA, with 60 per cent of the money going to the players and 40 per cent to the BCA," Lele said.
