Michelin refuses to be sole Formula One supplier

    Fri, May 7 04:45 PM

Enlarge Photo The logo of French tyremaker Michelin is seen during the company's 2009 annual results presentation... French tyre manufacturer Michelin will return to Formula One only if more than one supplier can compete, managing partner Didier Mariton said on Friday.

Formula One needs to find a new supplier after Japanese company Bridgestone said they would be pulling out at the end of this season after 14 years in the sport.

"We're in talks with the (International Automobile) Federation and the other bodies that run Formula One and we told them that if several brands were allowed in the sport then Michelin... would be ready to think about it," Mariton told a shareholders meeting.

Michelin also wants the sport to emphasize more on environment topics before making any decision, he added.

Bridgestone have been the sole supplier since 2007, after competing against Goodyear in 1997 and 1998 and Michelin from 2001 to 2006.
