Brothers Bob and Mike Bryan arrived too late to play but the United States made light of the absence of the top-ranked doubles pair to seal a 2-1 win over Australia in the World Team Cup on Monday.
John Isner and Sam Querrey defeated Carsten Ball and Paul Hanley 5-7 6-4 10-8 for the crucial point after the Bryan brothers were delayed in Madrid following their latest doubles title success on Sunday.
The decider in the round robin tie was played in front of just a handful of spectators after a series of rain delays.
Czech Republic also won in the Red Group, defeating Spain. Jan Hajek had won the opening singles on Sunday, and Tomas Berdych made the tie safe by earning a tense 6-7 6-4 6-3 victory over Nicolas Almagro.
Argentina defeated defending champions Serbia 2-1 in the Blue Group of the eight-team pre-French Open tournament.
Leading 1-0 after the opening day, Juan Monaco battled for two hours 24 minutes before sealing victory with a 1-6 6-3 7-6 win over Viktor Troicki.
Also in the Blue Group, France defeated host nation Germany 2-1 as Jeremy Chardy and Nicolas Mahut beat Christopher Kas and Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3 3-6 10-5.
