As if the slow scoring by their batsmen wasn't enough, the middle-order surge by Sanjay Verma and Rahul Bhatnagar of Malviya Cricket Club hammered in the final nail on Gush Cricket Club's coffin.
The result was a hammering: chasing 240 for a victory in 40 overs, Malviya batsmen pulled off the feat with 28 balls to spare and five wickets in hand in the Lala Raghubir Singh Hot Weather Tournament on Modern School grounds on Wednesday.
Gush opener Gurpreet Singh's 89 off 92 balls might seem a decent effort on most other days but it came on a small ground boundaries below 60 metres and a day after a successful run-chase of 300.
Gush CC's 100 came up in the 20th over and and even Gurpreet's innings came largely due to some slip-ups on the field. Malviya CC fielders grassed five catches and botched up a simple run out chance. The opener gave three chances in the 33rd over, bowled by Sanjay Verma, before finally being dismissed after his heave to deep midwicket was held. Wickets fell in a heap thereafter, as the others tried to get the scorecard moving.
For Malviya, spinner Sanjay Verma and medium-pacer Kapil Rana took three wickets each, while Oneil Wilson's seven overs fetched him two wickets.
Opening with a bang, Malviya CC raced to 36 by the third over. But the introduction of spin saw veteran Wilson caught, while fellow opener Dushyant Sharma was yorked by Bharat Veer. As the runs dried up, Malviya managed only 12 in the second powerplay.
At 77 for 4, Anurag Tyagi was joined at the crease by former Delhi U-19 skipper and club captain Rahul Bhardwaj. The two put together a partnership of 60 in 11 overs before Tyagi was stumped. In came Sanjay Verma and smashed 107 runs in 10 overs with Bhardwaj.
Verma was adjudged man of the match for his unbeaten 51 off 33 balls and three wickets . Bhardwaj hit an unbeaten 74 off 60 balls.
