Zimbabwe power defaulters get World Cup reprieve

Zimbabwe will not switch-off customers who have defaulted on their electricity bills during the World Cup in neighbouring South Africa, good news for thousands in the soccer-mad country, a government minister said.

Energy and Power Development Minister Elias Mudzuri told reporters on Wednesday the government had directed state power utility ZESA not to disconnect thousands of customers who have failed to settle their bills.

ZESA says it is owned more than $300 million by defaulting customers, affecting its ability to generate power.

"We are feeling that every Zimbabwean should be able to enjoy the World Cup," Mudzuri said. "It is during this time of the World Cup that we are allowing defaulters to enjoy electricity and celebrate with others."

Zimbabwe produces 1,100 megawatts of electricity, less than half of the 2,700 MW required the country requires.
