Former Ranji player attacked outside Sec 35 residence

    Sun, Jun 27 04:29 AM

A former Ranji player was assaulted with baseball bats and iron rods outside his Sector-35 residence around 5 am on Saturday. Rajeev Nayyar was going to the gym in his Swift car when the attack took place.

As soon as the 42-year-old cricket coach sat in the car, four youths armed with batons dragged him out and allegedly attacked him. Nayyar sustained serious injuries in his head, chest and legs, the police said.

After the accused left, Nayyar called the police control room. The police took him to the Sector-16 hospital from where he was referred to PGI. At present, he is admitted in PGI and his condition is said to be stable.

The victim reportedly told the police that his landlord Subhash Sharma was behind the attack. He said Sharma was forcing him to vacate the house and the dispute was five years old. A case in this regard is pending in court.

Nayyar further told the police that his brother was also threatened by some youths a few days ago.

The police said they were yet to confirm the landlord's involvement in the attack, as he has not been in the city for four days.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar said it was a case of old rivalry, as both parties had indulged in a fight a few months ago and were booked.

"The cricketer has been living in the house for 18 years and Subhash Sharma purchased the house six years ago," the DSP said. "The landlord's house is locked. We will question him once he returns."

Nayyar, former captain of the Himachal Pradesh team, holds the record of longest stay at the wicket. In 1999, he batted for 1,015 minutes and scored 271 against Jammu and Kashmir. This achievement was entered into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Victim's father S C Nayyar said they got a call from PGI that their son had met with an accident. "We all had gone to Jwalaji two days ago for a religious function. Rajeev came to Chandigarh, while we went to Chamba where we live. His landlord was asking him to vacate the house for a long time," he said.

A case of rioting, assault and criminal intimidation under Sections 323, 348 and 34 of the IPC has been registered in the Sector-36 police station.
