    Chavanel wins Stage 2 of Tour de France, takes overall lead

    France's Sylvain Chavanel broke away to win a rainswept second stage of the Tour de France on Monday and seize the overall race lead, while seven-time champion Lance Armstrong finished in the pack after being caught up in one of several crashes. Chavanel took the leader's yellow jersey off Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara who, like Armstrong and 2010 Tour winner Alberto Contador, were nearly four minutes behind in the main pack.

    Umar hits 64 in Pakistan's 167-8

    Umar Akmal smashed 64 off 31 balls as Pakistan made 167-8 in the first T20 international against Australia. Akmal hit seven fours and three sixes in his knock that rescued Pakistan after they were 47-4 by the eighth over. Kamran Akmal made 23 and Shoaib Malik 21. Pacemen Shaun Tait (2-25) and Dirk Nannes (2-41) finishing with best bowling figures for Australia.

    Peter George to replace Harris

    Australia have brought in pacer Peter George as replacement for injured all-rounder Ryan Harris in the Test squad for a two-match series against Pakistan later this month after an impressive performance in the Shield season. The selectors also added pacer Doug Bollinger, in England as part of the one-day squad, to the Twenty20 squad.

    Monika joins CWG camp

    After serving a two-year ban for a dope flunk in 2008, weightlifter Monika Devi has joined training for the Commonwealth Games after clearing a confirmatory test, the Indian Weightlifting Federation has said. The 69-kg lifter is training with 33 other elite lifters at the SAI facilities at Shilaroo after completing her two-year ban period last month. "Monika's ban period ended last month and she has cleared a mandatory confirmatory test by the NADA and joined Commonwealth Games camp," IWF secretary Sahdev Yadav said.

    Wimbledon's record attendance

    This year's men's final at Wimbledon attracted a record attendance on the final Sunday of the Grand Slam. The All England Club has said that 32,036 spectators came through the gates for Rafael Nadal's straight-set victory over Tomas Berdych in the final. The figure beat the previous record of 30,867 on the final Sunday last year. Overall attendance for the two-week tournament was 489,946, the second-highest total for 13 days behind the 511,043 last year.

    Jeev finishes tied 16th

    Jeev Milka Singh carded a second successive three-under 68, signing off tied 16th in the final round of the Alstom Open de France. In contrast, Jyoti Randhawa, who was tied fourth overnight, signed off tied 60th. Meanwhile, Arjun Atwal was done in by a poor front nine as he turned in his worst card of the week a four-over 74 to sign off tied 41st in the AT&T Nationals in Pennsylvania.

    Paes sixth, Sania falls to 132

    Leander Paes, who clinched his 12th Grand Slam with the Wimbledon mixed doubles' title, remained steady at sixth in the latest ATP list issued on Monday. Bhupathi, who along with Belarussian partner Max Mirnyi made a third-round exit from the Wimbledon, is seventh on the chart with 5,110 points. In the WTA list, the dip continues for Sania, who made a first-round exit from the Wimbledon. From last week's 111, Sania has now dropped to 132nd spot with 497 points to her credit.

    MPSHA trounce Goa 7-1

    Madhya Pradesh State Hockey Academy (MPSHA), Bhopal trounced Goa 7-1 in the 63rd senior national men's hockey championship at the Aishbagh Stadium. Vikash Choudhary scored five goals including a hat-trick, while Shailendra Bundela hit the other two. Goa's lone goal was scored by Rahbar Khan. In another match, Hyderabad beat Bihar 3-2. Hyderabad scored through Mohammad Azharullah Khan, R Shivakumar and T N Sudhir while Mohammad Riyazuddin and Deepak Kumar scored in for Bihar.

    Nations briefed on CWG security

    Nine High Commissioners and senior representatives of 27 nations participating in the October 3-14 Commonwealth Games were appraised of several organisational aspects, including ticketing and security, of the CWG at a special briefing here presided over by OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi.
