Germany looking to avenge heart-breaking Euro 2008 final defeat to Spain: Podolski

    Wed, Jul 7 11:50 AM

London, Jul 7 (ANI): Ahead of their semi-final clash against Spain, German striker Lukas Podolski has revealed that his team is still haunted by the heart-breaking Euro 2008 final defeat to Spain.

He said the agony of that 1-0 loss will always torment the team, but also drive them on here tonight.

"This would have been great final and our revenge for 2008. But we want to win and reach the final and possibly more. The defeat is something that's there to stay. It's still there and will always be in the back of my mind," Podolski said.

"The pain was so great and it will always be there. Now we have the chance to win against Spain. It's not a final but it's our opportunity to get to the final and win the trophy and that gives us extra motivation," The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Germany is full of confidence after comfortably beating England and Argentina in the knockout stages, scoring eight goals in the process.

Podolski said: "Self-confidence is a good thing and if you have it you can play much more strongly. We were very convincing in the win against England and we had a lot of pressure there too."

Germany's coach Joachim Low has warned Spain that they will take on a completely different team to the one they faced in Vienna two years ago.

"After we lost the final we were all very disappointed. But in that tournament Spain were clearly the best team and deserved to win it. Two years later we have clearly developed and are several steps ahead compared to 2008. Spain is one of the strongest teams on the planet," he said. (ANI)
